While September is still the expected launch month, with the announcement likely coming on 9 September 2025, the leaks we're seeing suggest this isn't just another incremental update.

Besides the ultra-slim Air model replacing the Plus variant, Apple appears to be going all-in on camera improvements. All four iPhone 17 models will reportedly feature a 24MP front-facing camera, doubling the resolution of the current 12MP sensors. The Pro models look even more impressive with three 48MP cameras and the possibility of 8x optical zoom, making this potentially Apple's biggest camera upgrade in years.

Apple is reshaping its iPhone lineup in 2025 with the introduction of an ultra-slim variant that breaks new ground in smartphone design. The iPhone 17 Air represents a strategic shift, replacing the Plus model with something dramatically different that emphasises elegance and portability above all else.

The most striking feature of the iPhone 17 Air is undoubtedly its extraordinary thinness. At just 5.5mm thick, it will be the thinnest iPhone ever created, significantly undercutting even the iPhone 6 (6.9mm), which has held the title for over a decade. This represents nearly a 40% reduction compared to the current iPhone 15 Pro Max (8.25mm).

Achieving such a slim profile requires careful engineering choices in materials and construction. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a 7000 series aluminium frame with glass on both front and back. Interestingly, some sources suggest Apple might incorporate a titanium-aluminium alloy to enhance durability without adding excessive weight. This hybrid approach would provide structural rigidity whilst maintaining the device's featherlight 146g weight.

Notably, this makes the iPhone 17 Air substantially lighter than the iPhone 16 Plus, which weighs a hefty 199g. For context, this places the Air in the same weight category as much smaller devices like the iPhone SE 2 (148g) or iPhone 13 mini (141g), despite offering a considerably larger 6.6-inch display.

The sleek design isn't uniform throughout, however. The camera module will protrude significantly, with the device potentially measuring 9.5mm at the camera bump. Nevertheless, the overall aesthetic represents Apple's most ambitious design departure in years.

Single camera and battery trade-offs

Creating such a thin device inevitably involves compromises. The most significant concession appears to be in the camera department, where the iPhone 17 Air will feature just a single rear lens—a stark contrast to the multi-camera arrays users have grown accustomed to on premium smartphones.

Furthermore, the device is expected to receive an upgraded 24MP front-facing camera, a significant improvement over the 12MP selfie cameras in current models. This enhancement will be consistent across the entire iPhone 17 lineup.

Perhaps the most controversial trade-off involves battery capacity. To accommodate the ultra-thin profile, the iPhone 17 Air will likely ship with a battery capacity between 2,800mAh and 3,000mAh. This represents a dramatic reduction from the 4,674mAh cell in the iPhone 16 Plus.

As Bloomberg's Mark Gurman explains, the Air targets those who "want something snazzier than a standard iPhone—but don't really need the performance, screen size or cameras of a Pro model". It's positioned for consumers who value premium design and are willing to accept certain compromises to achieve it.

Regarding cost, multiple sources indicate the iPhone 17 Air will be priced to match the current iPhone 16 Plus. This places it between the standard iPhone 17 and the Pro models in Apple's pricing hierarchy.

This strategic positioning makes sense given the device's specifications. While it sacrifices battery capacity and camera versatility, the Air offers several premium features including a 120Hz ProMotion display and the new A19 chip paired with 12GB of RAM. These enhancements help justify its mid-tier pricing despite the functional trade-offs.

Whether the Air succeeds where previous mid-tier iPhones like the Mini and Plus variants struggled remains to be seen. However, industry analysts believe its distinctive design approach gives it a stronger chance of finding a dedicated audience than its predecessors.

Major Camera Innovations in iPhone 17 Pro Models

This upgraded 48MP telephoto camera represents a four-fold increase in resolution from the current generation. The primary advantage of this enhancement lies in the improved detail capture and additional flexibility for post-processing. With three 48MP sensors, users will enjoy consistent image quality regardless of which lens they choose for their shot.

Additionally, the front-facing camera is also receiving a significant boost. All iPhone 17 models, including the Pro variants, will feature a 24-megapixel selfie camera, doubling the resolution of the current 12MP front camera. 8x optical zoom and mechanical aperture

One particularly useful feature coming to the iPhone 17 Pro models is dual video recording capability. This function will allow users to record video with both the front and rear cameras simultaneously directly through the built-in Camera app. While third-party apps like Snapchat already offer similar functionality, native integration will make this feature more accessible and likely offer better quality and performance.

This dual recording capability would be especially valuable for content creators on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, enabling them to easily overlay a shot of their face over world-facing video. iPhone 17 Display and Visual Experience

LTPO and 120Hz refresh rate

For the first time, all four iPhone 17 models will feature ProMotion display technology with a 120Hz maximum refresh rate. This represents a substantial improvement for the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, which will finally move beyond the 60Hz displays that have remained unchanged for years. The enhanced refresh rate delivers noticeably smoother scrolling, animations, and video playback across the entire range.

This upgrade is made possible by Apple's decision to equip every iPhone 17 model with low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels. LTPO technology enables much greater power efficiency at higher refresh rates, allowing displays to dynamically adjust between 1Hz and 120Hz depending on the content being shown. At the lower end, this enables features like the always-on display, whilst higher refresh rates activate when scrolling through content or playing compatible games.

The standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are expected to use the same OLED panel currently found in iPhone 16 Pro models, sourced from Samsung. These displays offer approximately 30% increased brightness and improved longevity compared to those in the standard iPhone 16 models. Moreover, some reports indicate the base iPhone 17 might feature a larger 6.3-inch screen (precisely 6.27 inches), compared to the 6.1-inch display on the iPhone 16.

Interestingly, certain sources suggest the non-Pro models might receive 120Hz displays without full ProMotion capabilities. This could mean they operate at fixed refresh rates (perhaps 60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz) rather than the complete variable range found in Pro models.

Dynamic Island and metalens changes

The Dynamic Island, introduced with iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, may receive its first major redesign since inception. According to analyst Jeff Pu, all four iPhone 17 models will adopt metalens technology for Face ID. This revolutionary approach uses flat lenses with metasurfaces to focus light rather than traditional curved lenses.

By integrating the Face ID transmitter and receiver components into a single unit, metalens technology could enable Apple to reduce the size of certain Face ID components, subsequently resulting in a smaller Dynamic Island across the lineup. Digital Chat Station, a reliable leaker, specifically mentioned the iPhone 17 Pro Max would benefit from this change, though Pu now believes all models will incorporate the technology.

Not everyone agrees on the Dynamic Island's future dimensions, however. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested in January that its size would remain "largely unchanged" across the iPhone 17 series. Given these conflicting reports from sources with proven track records, the final design remains somewhat uncertain.

Beyond hardware changes, the Dynamic Island interface itself is reportedly set for a "significant evolution". According to leaker Majin Bu, "Apple appears committed to making it more functional and integrated, turning it into a key element of the user experience". While specific details remain scarce, this suggests meaningful software enhancements to complement any physical redesign.

Nano-texture and anti-reflective coating

One anticipated display upgrade appears to have hit a roadblock. Apple had been working on a super scratch-resistant anti-reflective display coating for the iPhone 17 Pro models. This would have made them the first iPhones with a dedicated anti-reflective display, potentially reducing reflections significantly whilst improving durability.

Unfortunately, Apple encountered scaling issues with the manufacturing process. The coating application was simply too slow when considering the millions of devices Apple produces annually, even when limited to Pro models. As a result, this feature has reportedly been cancelled for the iPhone 17 lineup.

This setback places Apple at a potential disadvantage compared to Samsung, whose Galaxy S24 Ultra features Gorilla Glass Armour that reduces reflections by up to 75%. The technology noticeably improves contrast in bright lighting conditions and makes colours appear more true to life even in direct sunlight.

Apple does currently offer nano-texture display technology for Mac and iPad Pro models to reduce glare. Yet this has never been extended to the iPhone lineup. It remains unclear whether Apple might pivot to nano-texture glass as an alternative solution or simply postpone anti-reflective display improvements until manufacturing challenges can be overcome.

Performance Boost with A19 Chip and RAM Upgrades

The power under the hood of the iPhone 17 family represents one of Apple's most substantial internal upgrades in recent memory. With the new A19 series of chips, significant RAM increases, and advanced thermal management, Apple appears determined to push mobile performance boundaries whilst maintaining efficiency.

A19 vs A19 Pro chipsets

Apple's A19 chip family will be manufactured using TSMC's third-generation 3-nanometer process (N3P), an advancement over the N3E process used in the A18 series. This refined fabrication method delivers approximately 5% better performance at identical power levels compared to its predecessor.

The distribution of these chips across the lineup remains somewhat contentious among leakers. Essentially, all iPhone 17 models will receive some version of the A19 chip, albeit with meaningful distinctions between variants:

  • iPhone 17: Standard A19 chip
  • iPhone 17 Air: Possibly A19 Pro with 5-core GPU
  • iPhone 17 Pro: A19 Pro with 6-core GPU
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: A19 Pro with 6-core GPU

This configuration would mark a strategic shift from previous generations, where non-Pro models typically received last year's chips. Indeed, giving the new iPhone 17 Air an A19 Pro chip—even with one fewer GPU core—suggests Apple is positioning it as a premium offering despite its ultra-thin profile.

Performance improvements are expected to be substantial, with some sources indicating a 20-25% speed boost over previous generation processors. This enhancement primarily benefits resource-intensive activities like video editing and gaming, whilst maintaining consistent performance during extended use.

12GB RAM across models

Perhaps the most consequential upgrade involves memory expansion. The iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, and Air models are all expected to feature 12GB of RAM, a remarkable 50% increase over the 8GB found in current iPhone 16 models.

The standard iPhone 17 model presents a more complicated situation. Initially, Ming-Chi Kuo reported Apple would make a final decision by May 2025 on whether to equip it with 12GB or retain 8GB. Henceforth, newer leaks from Digital Chat Station claim all iPhone 17 models will feature 12GB RAM, whereas Jeff Pu suggests the base model might remain at 8GB.

This memory expansion serves several critical functions:

  • Enables larger, more capable AI models to run locally
  • Improves speed and responsiveness of complex tasks
  • Supports smoother multitasking with AI processes running in background

The RAM type may differ slightly between models, with Pro versions reportedly receiving LPDDR5X while the Air could use LPDDR5, correspondingly affecting performance and power efficiency.

Vapour chamber cooling system

To manage heat generated by these powerful components, Apple is integrating advanced thermal management technology. The iPhone 17 Pro models will almost certainly incorporate a vapour chamber cooling system, with some reports suggesting the feature might extend to all iPhone 17 variants.

This cooling mechanism consists of a thin, sealed metal chamber containing a small amount of liquid. During intensive tasks:

  1. The device heats up, converting liquid to vapour
  2. Pressure pushes vapour through microchannels
  3. Heat disperses across the chamber's surface area
  4. Vapour cools and condenses back to liquid
  5. Process repeats continuously

The copper plates contain delicate microchannels throughout and would cover the entire circuit board—including processor, memory, and networking chips. Albeit more complex than current solutions, this approach distributes heat more effectively than the graphene pad and metal enclosure currently used.

This cooling advancement should allow for "higher sustained performance under heavy load with virtually no throttling", addressing a longstanding issue where iPhones must reduce performance during extended intensive use to prevent overheating.

Combined with the A19 Pro's enhanced thermal management, these innovations should finally resolve the recurring problem where "performance gains of the chip offset the improvements in cooling", delivering more consistent real-world performance.

Battery Life and Charging Enhancements

Battery technology undergoes dramatic shifts across the iPhone 17 lineup, with Apple pursuing two opposite design philosophies—ultra-slim efficiency in the Air model versus maximum capacity in the Pro Max.

iPhone 17 Air's 2800mAh battery

The pursuit of extreme thinness in the iPhone 17 Air comes with considerable power compromises. This model will feature a battery capacity of approximately 2,800 mAh, making it significantly smaller than any iPhone 16 model. In comparison, the current iPhone 16 has a 3,561 mAh battery whilst the 16 Plus boasts a substantial 4,674 mAh cell.

Such a dramatic reduction raises legitimate concerns about daily usage. Apple's internal testing indicates that merely 60-70% of iPhone 17 Air users will complete a full day without requiring a recharge. For context, this metric ranges between 80-90% for other iPhone models.

To counterbalance these limitations, Apple has developed two solutions. First, iOS 26 introduces a new Adaptive Power mode specifically designed to extend battery life through intelligent power management. Secondly, Apple plans to release a dedicated battery case as an optional accessory for the Air model, reviving a product category that hasn't seen updates since the iPhone 11 era.

5000mAh in iPhone 17 Pro Max

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will apparently become Apple's first smartphone to cross the 5,000 mAh battery threshold, a capacity that has long been standard in premium Android devices. This represents a meaningful increase from the 4,685 mAh battery found in the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Given Apple's typically excellent power optimisation, this enlarged battery could potentially deliver between 36-40 hours of video playback—a remarkable figure that would establish the iPhone 17 Pro Max as the undisputed battery champion in Apple's lineup. The iPhone 16 Pro Max already offers 33 hours of video playback, so this improvement would be substantial.

The expanded battery capacity appears to be part of a deliberate strategy shift. Whilst the iPhone 17 Air caters to those who prioritise aesthetics and portability, the Pro Max seems positioned as a "no compromises" device that emphasises function over form, even if it results in a slightly thicker profile.

Electrically released adhesive and MagSafe redesign

A practical yet important improvement coming to the entire iPhone 17 lineup involves how batteries are attached inside the devices. All four models will adopt the electrically released adhesive technology that Apple debuted on the non-Pro iPhone 16 models.

This innovative approach allows batteries to be removed by simply running an electrical current through the adhesive, which temporarily reduces its strength. As a result, technicians can extract batteries with minimal force, eliminating the need for heat guns, crowbars, and other potentially damaging tools previously required for battery replacements.

Visual Intelligence and AI tools

iOS 26 significantly expands Visual Intelligence capabilities beyond just camera usage. For the first time, this technology extends to anything displayed on the iPhone 17's screen. Users can capture screenshots and analyse them with Visual Intelligence to identify objects, search for similar products, or ask ChatGPT questions about on-screen content.

A standout feature is "Highlight to Search," which allows users to circle specific elements within screenshots—similar to Android's Circle to Search—and find related information. Visual Intelligence now recognises art, books, landmarks, and sculptures alongside its existing ability to identify plants and animals. The system can even detect calendar events on screen and offer to add them directly to your schedule.

Gaming, Messages, and Maps updates

The all-new Games app serves as a centralised hub for iPhone 17 users' gaming activities. This dedicated application organises all installed games while offering personalised recommendations and enabling score-based competitions with friends through a "Play Together" tab.

Messages receives meaningful upgrades including a polling feature for group chats and Live Translation, which automatically translates conversations across different languages in real-time. Customisable chat backgrounds add personalisation options.

Aluminium vs titanium frames

Surprisingly, Apple appears ready to abandon titanium frames merely one generation after introducing them. Reports indicate all iPhone 17 models, including the Pro variants, will switch to aluminium frames. This represents a significant shift considering titanium was heavily marketed as a premium feature for iPhone 16 Pro models just last year. The iPhone 17 Air specifically is expected to feature grade 7000 aluminium. Primarily, this change might be driven by cost considerations, as titanium is approximately 10-15 times more expensive than aluminium. Interestingly, aluminium is actually lighter than titanium, yet titanium offers superior durability.

Camera bump redesign

The most visible external change involves the camera arrangement. Rather than maintaining the square bump design, Apple will reportedly adopt a larger rectangular camera bump spanning the entire width of the device. This aluminium-constructed housing represents a dramatic departure from current aesthetics. The cameras themselves may be arranged horizontally within this extended bump, giving the iPhone 17 Pro a distinctly Google Pixel-like appearance.

MagSafe alignment and logo repositioning

Consequently, the iconic Apple logo will shift position, moving noticeably lower on the iPhone 17 Pro. This marks the first logo repositioning since the iPhone 11 series. Additionally, the MagSafe magnet arrangement will feature a distinctive gap in its circular formation, specifically designed to showcase the repositioned logo. Despite these adjustments, existing MagSafe accessories should remain fully compatible.
